Mirror Indy, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to providing community-based journalism that informs and empowers Indianapolis residents to shape their city for the better, is looking for an experienced editor to help manage our small, but growing award-winning newsroom.
The News Editor is a critical part of the newsroom's management team, reporting to the Managing Editor. Their primary task will be helping reporters produce daily community and accountability reporting along with revelatory enterprise and compelling explanatory content.
The News Editor will work closely with reporters to fill gaps in local news coverage of Indianapolis, improve copy and storytelling while also helping the Managing Editor shape beats and guide coverage to ensure it reflects community interests. Additionally, they will help manage the editorial calendar to ensure the newsroom is publishing several pieces of content each day.
The News Editor will be part of a team, led by the Managing Editor, that includes several beat reporters covering government, economics, education, neighborhoods and health. They will also work closely with the Community Journalism Director and the Managing Editor, Innovation, whose team includes the art director, social media strategist and web producer.
Launched in December 2023, Mirror Indy’s top priority is to earn the trust of the communities it serves through two-way relationships and an innovative community-led reporting model. We believe journalism is a service to our community, and we should not only listen but also be responsive to the needs of our audience. We also believe community journalism must also hold power to account.
Our content is distributed over a variety of platforms designed to broaden storytelling formats and engage a wide range of audiences.
