Web Producer
The Role

Mirror Indy is seeking a web producer to plan, design and manage content for our website, ensuring that our work is eye-catching and accessible to our audiences. This is an exciting opportunity to join a startup local news organization that is dedicated to serving communities that have traditionally been underserved by the media.

The web producer, who is part of the Mirror Indy innovation team, will work with reporters and editors to develop and shape the presentation of stories and special projects in WordPress. They will also create and/or edit multimedia storytelling elements. A key part of this role involves collaboration with newsroom leadership to provide support and service to our local media partners.

The ideal candidate will be a talented journalist who has 2+ years of experience in a newsroom and who has an entrepreneurial spirit — you can thrive in a startup environment where you are expected to learn as you go and think outside the box.

Responsibilities & Priorities
  • Produce daily stories and newsletters
  • Work with the art director to design special projects, incorporating graphics, illustrations, video, audio and other storytelling components 
  • Participate in regular news meetings to identify collaboration opportunities and brainstorm creative story approaches
  • Work with reporters and editors to set priorities and deadlines
  • Edit short videos and audio clips for the web and social media
  • Design and create new pages for the website 
  • Do basic copyediting and write headlines, deks and other display copy as needed
  • Identify opportunities to republish content from local media partners and help those partners share our news and information 
  • Maintain the website and work with our vendor to quickly troubleshoot issues 
  • Work a 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. shift Monday through Friday, with flexibility needed for breaking news

  • Basic proficiency with HTML and CSS
  • Basic video and audio editing skills
  • Basic SEO knowledge or a desire to learn
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or a desire to learn
  • Ability to work under deadline and prioritize work
  • Interpersonal/communications skills - willing to negotiate and talk through issues in an honest and clear manner
  • Ability to maintain confidence when working with sensitive information
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals internal and external to the newsroom
Compensation and Benefits

Salary level: Minimum $55,000, commensurate with experience.

Benefits: Full health benefits, including employee’s medical premium covered 100%; paid leave including two weeks of closures during the year for all staff, generous personal time policy and a 401K with a 4% match.

Training: $2,000 stipend toward outside training and professional development opportunities.

What to expect in the hiring process

We are looking to fill this role as soon as possible, though the hiring process can take a few weeks to a couple of months. We will do our best to communicate with you about timing expectations throughout the process. 

Candidates who advance to later rounds of this process can expect two to three interviews. Semi-finalists will be asked to complete a paid assignment to help us understand your thinking and approach to the role.
