Free Press Indiana welcomes Ashley C. Ford to their team as the women & girls reporter — covering statewide issues and topics of interest concerning the well-being of women and girls living in Indiana.
The role is the first hire of its kind for FPI, founded in 2023 with the goal of filling gaps in credible news accessibility and fostering collaboration in the Indiana news ecosystem.
This expansion statewide builds off our proven community-centered model of Mirror Indy in Indianapolis and extends our mission to ensure Hoosiers everywhere have access to news and information that explains how policy and community decisions affect them daily.
Ford, a native Hoosier and author of the New York Times bestselling memoir Somebody’s Daughter, has written and/or guest edited for the New York Times, The Guardian, ELLE Magazine, Teen Vogue, New York Magazine, Allure and Marie Claire, among many other print and digital publications.
“Thoughtful and engaging reporting on the experience of women and girls in our state provides a vehicle through which to examine all that impacts the quality of life for everyday Hoosiers - from legislative policy, to education, health care, housing and culture,” said Bro Krift, CEO of Free Press Indiana. “The possibilities for this role are manifold and we are grateful to have such a bold and creative thinker join us on this journey.”
Ford will officially start her role with FPI on Sept. 29. Her reporting will be made available via Free Press Indiana’s websites, newsletters and social platforms. The content will also be free to republish for other newsgathering organizations.
The new role is possible thanks to early collaborators such as Tamara Winfrey-Harris, president of Women’s Fund of Central Indiana; Leslie Bailey, CEO and co-founder of Indy Maven and representatives from the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, who all provided inspiration, research and support.
We can’t wait to introduce you to Ashley at events around the state.
